Ed Messmer update: Kevin and I stopped by to see him yesterday (5/8). He was back on a medical floor (not in rehab) due to another setback with his Crohn's disease - they can't seem to get that under control. He was doing a little better prior to that. It is tough to explain how he is doing if you don't have a frame of reference for how bad he was. He is much better, but still has a very long road in front of him. He has been there 3 months now. He can see a little bit now, but does not have much depth perception, he can whisper responses, but is only giving a few words at a time (so not fully communicating). He certainly understands who folks are, though he does need to think about it and he will get confused. They have him on various medications that I suspect cause some of the confusion. He does not engage much, but it is clear he knows what is going on for the most part, and it is clear he still has his sense of humor. He can't really sit up on his own. He did regain some movement on his left side. His right side is still pretty strong. He has lost a ton of weight and his muscles are very atrophied. It is slightly shocking to see him, though overall he does look good. I didn't quite have the nerve to take a selfie with him...lol! I pray he continues to improve and they get this digestive stuff under control so that he can continue on his road to recovery!
